Google Ads Structure Explained: Campaigns, Ad Groups & Ads
Learn what campaigns, ad groups, and ads are in Google Ads and how they fit together in a well structured account.
Campaigns: The top level container
A campaign is the highest level in a Google Ads account structure. It defines your overall goal, budget, location and language settings, network (Search, Display, Shopping, etc.), and bidding strategy.
For example, you might create one campaign for “India – Search – Product Sales” and another for “Global – Display – Brand Awareness.” Each campaign runs separately, with its own daily budget and objectives.
Ad groups: Thematic clusters inside a campaign
Inside each campaign you create ad groups, which group together ads that share a common theme, such as a product category or service type. Each ad group contains:
• Keywords (for Search campaigns)
• Ads
• Targeting settings (optional audiences, content, or devices)
For instance, in a “Shoes” campaign, you might have one ad group for “Running Shoes,” another for “Formal Shoes,” and a third for “Kids Shoes,” each with tailored keywords and messages.
Ads: The creatives that show to users
Ads are the actual creatives that appear on Google Search, YouTube, Display, or Shopping, depending on your campaign type. In Search, an ad is usually made of:
• 3–5 headlines
• 2 description lines
• A display URL and path (optional)
• Extensions (sitelinks, callouts, call, location, etc.)
In Display or Discovery, ads can be text and image, responsive, or video based formats. The ad copy and visual design must match the keywords and audience in its ad group to get good relevance and CTR.
How campaigns, ad groups, and ads work together
The hierarchy is:
Account → Campaign → Ad group → Ads & keywords/targeting.
• Campaigns set the “rules” (budget, networks, location, bidding).
• Ad groups organize related themes and keywords.
• Ads deliver the message optimized for those keywords and audiences.
A clean, well structured account with focused campaigns and tightly themed ad groups generally gets better quality scores, higher CTRs, and lower CPCs.
