Tribune Tower: Chicago’s Gothic Landmark Built from Pieces of the World

Rising majestically along North Michigan Avenue, the Tribune Tower is one of Chicago’s most distinctive buildings—a neo-Gothic skyscraper that stands not only as a symbol of journalism but also as a tribute to architecture from around the world. Completed in 1925, the tower has fascinated visitors for nearly a century with its intricate design, fascinating history, and stones from over 150 world landmarks embedded in its walls.

🏛️ A Global Symbol of Journalism

The Tribune Tower was built as the new headquarters for the Chicago Tribune newspaper, which hosted an international design competition in 1922 to create “the most beautiful office building in the world.” The winning design came from New York architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood, who envisioned a soaring neo-Gothic skyscraper that fused old-world elegance with American innovation.

The result was a 463-foot-tall masterpiece, featuring flying buttresses, ornate pinnacles, spires, and sculptural details that rival Europe's grand cathedrals.

🧱 The Famous Stones from Around the World

Perhaps the most captivating feature of the Tribune Tower is its collection of stones embedded into the base of the building—fragments from global landmarks, brought back by Tribune correspondents over the years.

Some notable stones include:

  • The Great Wall of China
  • The Eiffel Tower
  • The Colosseum
  • The Taj Mahal
  • The Pyramids of Giza
  • The Berlin Wall
  • Even Moon rock (replica) from the Apollo 15 mission

Each stone is marked and labeled, turning the building into an open-air museum of world history.

🏢 From Newspaper HQ to Luxury Residences

The Tribune newspaper vacated the building in 2018, and the tower has since been transformed into a luxury residential development known as Tribune Tower Residences. While its function has changed, the tower still retains all of its historic grandeur and remains open to public view from the outside.

The Gothic crown, limestone façade, and preserved architectural details ensure that the spirit of the original Tribune Tower lives on—even as new residents move in.
